Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) in plants is a maternally inherited inability to produce functional pollen. CMS is generally caused by aberrant mitochondrial genes that are often chimeric in structure and frequently co-transcribed with conventional mitochondrial genes (Hanson and Bentolila, 2004).
