Among Chinese contemporary female writers, Chen Ran is credited with the concept of ＂transgender consciousness＂ which derives from Virginia Woolf＇ s ＂androgyny＂; thus it is taken as the inheritance and development of western feminist literary theories. In Chen Ran＇s novels, ＂transgender consciousness＂ is embodied in transcendence of gender difference in emotion, literary creation and personality, representing Chen Ran＇ s highest pursuit that writers should neither be confined to their own gender identity in writing and creation, nor abandon the gendered world and vision; they should avoid any extreme feminism or masculinism in order to achieve an ultimate concern for the fate of humanity as a whole. ＂Transgender consciousness＂ implies a warm humanity care; it is not only a literary concept, but also a humanized pursuit. In her creation, Chen Ran avoids gender restriction, striving for the spiritual world of bisexual merging and co-existence in harmony.
