《恐怖分子》是约翰·厄普代克创作的一部独特的"9·11"小说。作品以美国内部生发的恐怖分子为全书的叙述焦点,在表层延续穆斯林是潜在恐怖分子的心理定势话语下,进行了恐怖分子是替罪羊的反省叙事,揭露了施行恐怖袭击的艾哈迈德既是阿訇谢尔德一方设计的结果,又遭到美国中情局的引诱,成为替罪羊。厄普代克通过犹太人杰克与恐怖分子的对话,实现了理想、和平式制控,消解了恐怖行动。替罪羊恐怖分子的塑造一方面显示出厄普代克大胆、超越主流的话语建构,同时基于族裔、宗教等心理定势的恐怖分子书写也暴露出作者的历史局限性。
Terrorist, John Updike's 9/11 novel, focuses on the life of an American-born terrorist. The novel both echoes and disrupts the popular discourse that tends to stereotype all Muslims as potential terrorists. The terrorist Ahmad, who is plotted against by both his imam Shaikh Rashid and the CIA, turns out to be a scapegoat. Through his story Updike imagines an ideal peaceful control of terrorism, but his alternative sympathetic image of a terrorist is nevertheless based on ethnical and religious labels, thus indicating again his historical limitations as well.
