Victor Pelevin's novel Generation "P" is often read as an inspiring story about Tatarski's way to success. This article argues that the social significance of this novel lies in its diagnosis of, warning against, and anxiety over a consumer society in which contemporary Russian intelligentsia find themselves surrounded by a flood of disparate information. Against the utopia of consumerism, the novel reveals how the unique "Russian society of the spectacle" is supported by advertisements and television and manipulated by big money, behind which lurks a horrible prospect of the world.
