Light in August, written by William Faulkner, the spokesman of American Southern literature, reflects the living conditions and psychological states of people in the old Southern part of America from many aspects with its gothic features, which also mirrors the social realities of the Reconstruction period of the American South. The paper focuses on an interpretation of Joanna＇s psychological world by using Freudian theory of structure of psyche： id, ego and superego with the aim of analyzing the reason of Joann＇s tragic life in that particular period of American South—the lost of Ego.
