Hou Zhi's Taste of Tan Ci Ballads and Her View on Female Talent and Virtue

侯芝是清代中期的女弹词作家兼编订家,她曾以修月阁主人的名号改订《锦上花》一书。侯芝在中晚年时期,热衷于弹词的改编和创作活动。这一活动始终贯穿着一个明确的宗旨:推崇并宣扬儒家伦理道德思想,讴歌忠孝仁义,写人叙事力求平正而不尚奇险,。她对《再生缘》中那些违背伦理纲常的思想和行为,提出了尖锐的批评。侯芝肯定并重视女子之才,但更看重女德。这与她幼年所受的教育有较大的关系。

Hou Zhi is a writer and editor of Tan Ci ballads in the Mid - Qing Dynasty. She is the reviser and compiler of several Tan Ci works, and has been enthusiastically engaged in adapting and creating Tan Ci works in her later years. Her activities always run through a clear purpose： i.e. , advocating and propagandi- zing Confucian ethics and eulogize the virtues of loyalty, filial piety and benevolence, etc. Her narrative and figure creation are usually emphasizing the evenness and straightness, without much novelty and thrillingness. She vigorously criticizes those thoughts and behaviors which violate Confucianism in the Zai Sheng Yuan. Hou Zhi confirms and pays attention to female talents, but she emphasizes more on female virtue and morality. This is greatly due to the education in her childhood.
