In general, a native Yi name consists of two paris, of which the family name goes ahead of the given name, and each part usually has two syllables. The native names are of great cultural significance; and the transliteration of the native names into Chinese characters is required in the contacts and communications between the Yi people and the Han majority. However, due to different phonological systems between the Yi languages and Mandarin Chinese, the transliteration is sometime undesirable. Therefore, intended to discuss how to appropriately transliterate the native Yi names into Chinese characters. The native names used herein are from the Northern Yi areas (Liangshan in Southern Sichuan) . The analysis will be based on linguistics and phonetics with a reference of the semantics and the writing systems. Finally some feasible suggestions will be proposed on the transliteration of the native Yi names into Chinese characters.
