Scholars in the West tend to adopt a paradigmatic approach to retranslation studies, which is most vividly reflected through their efforts to formulate the so-called "retranslation hypothesis" and through the ensuing systematic researches done to test the hypothesis. That also points to the first characteristic of retranslation studies in the West, that is, there is a dynamic continuity in the construction of retranslation theoretical system. Through the cycle of "hypothesis-- testing--hypothesis revision--testing", revisions or expansions of previously formulated hypotheses have been continuously made to certain extent to set up a scientific model. At the same time, retranslation studies in the West have been hindered by its fixed research pattern in that those complicated factors and phenomena involved in the process of retranslations may easily be ignored or simplified when it focuses too much on covering the laws of all retranslations and predicting their trends through the formulation of retranslation hypotheses.
