Analysis of the Phenomenon of Conferring Surnames and Names in the Song Dynasty

宋代政府赐姓和名的主要对象是边疆少数民族首领、归明人、内附人及蕃官、建立功勋的大臣与其后代。宋廷利用赐姓和名的手段,以期达到羁縻少数民族政权、安抚归顺者和旌表忠臣的目的。赐姓和名是宋代政治文化的一种反映,也和当时的战争局面有着密切的联系。

The people conferred surnames or names by the government of the Song Dynasty were mainly the leaders of the Minorities in frontier,the aliens and the Han people submitted to the Ming Dynasty, foreign officials and meritorious ministers and their offsprings. Through conferrring surnames and names, the Song Dynasty realized the objectives of controlling the Minority regimes,pacifying the peopele submitted to the government,and honoring the loyal officials. Conferrring surnames and names is a reflection of the political culture of the Song Dynasty,and it is also closely related to the wars at that time.
