《释名》既是一部语言学辞典,也是一部百科全书。《释宫室》篇为《释名》的一章,专门训释宫室楼台方面的词汇。《释宫室》篇所释的建筑词汇按照功能的不同可以分为民居建筑、官府建筑和公共建筑。从《释宫室》篇所释的内容来看,汉代居住建筑的功能分区明确、木构建筑的结构严密。

Shi Ming, or Explanation of Names, is a linguistic dictionary and an encyclopedia as well. One chapter called Shi Gongshi, or Explanation of Palace Buildings, explains the terms and words relating to palace buildings. Architectural terms can be, in terms of function, broken down into civilian buildings, governmental buildings and public buildings. In light of what Shi Gongshi treats, civilian buildings in Han Dynasty are functionally distinctive and structurally well-knit.
