Glaucoma is the second cause of blindness in the world. Lowering IOP is the most effective therapeutic means for this disease ,whether drugs or operation. If patients with glaucoma are unable to achieve good control of IOP with medical therapy or laser treatments, surgical interventions are considered. With the development of minimally invasive surgery, a variety of aqueous humor drainage device are used in clinic. Ex-PRESS glaucoma drainage is a new type of miniature drainage device for reducing IOP of glaucoma. This article will give a general review of the EX-PRESS glaucoma drainage models, biological characteristics and flow controllability, the evolution of surgical procedures, indications and contraindications, the comparison of effect with conventional trabeculectomy, postoperative complications, combined surgical problems and risk factors for surgical failure.
