普通话是中华民族族际共同语,中华人民共和国国家通用语言,国际通用语。普通话在不同场合使用着不同的名称和不同的语言变体。文章论述的主要内容是:对新时期普通话的名称及其变体应持有的认识;如何处理普通话同其他语言和语言变体的关系;如何进一步提升普通话的功能地位;如何在国内外扩大普通话的传播范围和提高传播效率。

Putonghua（PTH）is the common language of the Chinese nation,the official language of the People＇s Republic of China,and one of international languages.PTH has different names and different varieties.This paper covers the following aspects：approaches to the understanding of the different names of PLH and its varieties in the new era;approaches to dealing with the relations among PTH and other languages and their varieties;approaches to improving the functions and roles of PTH;approaches to improving the efficiency of PTH in a wider area of the world.
