玛尔塔·罗哈斯是一位有着强烈社会历史责任感的当代知名作家,自2010年以来,为促进中、古两国文化交流而先后两次来华。罗氏的经典小说《黄色行李》,以19世纪下半叶疯狂贩卖"契约华工"为宏观历史背景,叙述了主人公尼古拉斯·唐克和中国仆人范倪远度重洋向古巴贩运华人苦力的惊心动魄的经历,其间穿插着主仆之间的相互算计与斗争,从而将那段鲜为人知的"浮动地狱"历史以及那些闪烁着古老魅力的东方文化渐次勾勒出来。"浮动地狱"华工历史的悲惨与中国文化元素的睿智极不协调地出现于作家的笔下,共同书写了19世纪下半叶处于风雨飘摇之际却又充满睿智的神秘中国。
Marta Rojas, one of the most prominent authoresses for her strong sense of social and historical responsibility, has come to China twice in order to promote the cultural exchange between the two countries since 2010. Her classic novel The Yellow Suitcase, against the grand historical background of the traffic in Chinese indentured labor in the second half of the nineteenth century, narrates Chinese coolies transported from China to Cuba by Nicolas Tanco with the aid of his servant Fan Ni, as well as Fan Ni' s rebellion and struggle against his master, as a result gradually standing out the little-known history of "the Floating Hell" and the Oriental culture filled with the old charm. By constructing the miserable history of Chinese indentured labor coming to Cuba from "the Floating Hell" and the Chinese cultural elements full of ancient charm, Rojas has accomplished her compatible but real writing about China full of mystery and wisdom, notwithstanding being beleaguered throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century.
