“三美论”视角下的《红楼梦》对联翻译——以霍克斯的译文为例

On the Translation of Couplets in the Story of the Stone:From the Perspective of “Three Beauties”

"三美论"是许渊冲提出的诗歌翻译标准,对联属于诗歌中的一种,因此也适用该翻译理论。《红楼梦》中的众多对联,既反映了作者的写作水平,又对作品中的故事情节、人物描写起到了重要的作用。对联的翻译体现了译者的水平。中英两种语言的差异,使得对联的翻译要达到"三美"并非易事。

＂Three Beauties＂ is the translation standard of poems put forward by Xu Yuanchong. Because couplets are also a kind of poem, the theory is applicable to the translation of couplets too. There are so many couplets in the Story of the Stone that they not only reflect the author＇s skill in writing, but also contribute to the description of plot and characters. Therefore, the translation of the couplets may pose some difficulties for the translators.
