The gothic short story Berenice created by Edgar Allan · Poe is named after the heroine Be- renice who was buried alive by her cousin Egaeus. Colored with gothic horror, the short story also reveals the characters＇ psychological activities. Therefore, on the basis of Lacan＇s Mirror Theory, the paper ap- plies textual close reading to put emphasis on the analysis of Egaeus＇s psychological development from childhood to adulthood and the reasons why he ＂castrates＂ Berenice alive in the tomb.
