This paper examines spatial double illusion of the female protagonist Oedipa in Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49. The dual illusion characterizes her way of thinking in the process of her pursuit of the spiritual order, and indicates the limits of the modernist writing strategy of internal turn. By introducing the historical background of city crisis caused by suburbanization and spatial segregation in the post-war American society, the paper further explores the middle-class suburban ideology in Oedipa's thoughts which has made her misunderstand the lower class and marginal groups in the city ghettos represented by Tristero.
