Think on the Solid:Schlemihl's Shadow and the Rise of the German Nationalism

"丧失影子"是19世纪法裔德国作家阿达贝特·冯·沙米索的童话小说《彼得·施莱米尔的奇异故事》的核心母题,其象征意涵历来说法不一,其中一种重要观点是认为影子象征着祖国。本文认为这一说法遮蔽了产生影子意象的具体生存情境:施莱米尔的影子不应被泛泛地理解为一般意义上的"祖国",而应被具体地理解为德意志民族主义兴起这个特定历史背景下的国族身份认同。

Shadowlessness, or the lost shadow, is the central motive of Adalbert von Chamisso＇s novella Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte. One of the important interpretations of this motive recognized the lost shadow as the lost motherland. This paper argues that this interpretation has concealed the concrete existential situation of the shadowlessness motive. Schlemihl＇s shadow is not to be understood as the motherland in a general sense, but the nation-confession under the background of the rise of German nationalism.
