Vladimir Nabokov's main works are chess problems. As a narrative strategy, chess problems are put into the text and shape the narrative structure. Knight's move is among those chess strategies Nabokov applied. The analysis of knight's move from the perspective of chess metaphor contributes to offering Nabokov's exploration to the essence of mortal aesthetics in Lolita. Like Humbert's harm to Lolita, the structural metaphor of knight's move represents a threat to the aesthetic bliss of art. The ultimate art admired by Nabokov should be a living thing like the butterfly, and its mortality makes it aesthetic. However, mortal aesthetics is elusive and unsustainable in literary narration.
