Tracing to the Etymology of Dingguagua(顶呱呱) and Guaguajiao(呱呱叫)

俗语词"顶呱呱""呱呱叫"何以有"好"义,迄今不明。有些人认为"呱"的本字为"佸、刮",均牵强难通。本文认为"呱"的本字为"姡",早见于先秦,其由来十分久远,由此可见俗语词生命力的顽强及其演变的曲折。方言中"乖"有漂亮义,也是来自"姡"。

There are various explanations about the etymological motivations of the words dingguagua（顶呱呱） and guaguajiao （呱呱叫）, but none of them is persuasive. In this paper, the two words are given new explanations. The author thinks that the original character of gua （呱） is gua （姡） and j iao （ 叫） is suffix.
