Objective To investigate the effectiveness of dual-task timed up and go test( TUG) for predicting falls in the elderly. Methods Eighty-seven elderly volunteers were recruited and divided into two groups: fall group( n = 43)and non-fall group( n = 44). The test of single-task TUG and dual-task TUG,carrying a cup of water( TUG-manual) or carried out serial 3 times subtraction( TUG-cognitive) were conducted in two groups. The data were observed and compared between the two groups. Results The time of test of TUG-single,TUG-cognitive and TUG-manual in fall group were significantly more than those in non-fall group( P〈0. 05). There were significantly moderate correlation between TUG-single time and TUG-cognitive time and the history of falls( P〈0. 05). Conclusions The dual-task TUG test is a quick, easy testing tool, and it may be useful for predicting falls in the elderly.
