Traceability of "xibao"

"细胞"一词最早见于日本宇田川榕菴的《植学啟原》(1834),但据沈国威研究,《植学放原》中的"细胞"是指小胞,非cell。真正用来指cell的"细胞"始见于韦廉臣和李善兰合译的《植物学》(1858),后来该词通过《植物学》传到日本,并在那里流行、定型。19世纪末至20世纪初该词又传回中国,并得到广泛使用。

The Chinese term xibao （cell） was firstly used in the text Zhiwuxue （ Botany） , prepared by Alexander Williamson and Li Shanlan,which was published in Shanghai in 1858. A facsimile edition of the work was published in Japan in 1867. xibao was first introduced in Japan through his work. According to Shen Guowei,s opinion, UdagawaYoan（宇田川榕菴） used the saibo（細胞） in his work 植学啟原（Shokugaku Keigen,1834） to refer to the utricle.
