By piecing the fragments of history together and reprocessing it during the process of literary creation,Hardy reconstructs the history of southwest England in Victorian times in his masterpiece Tess of the D' Ubervilles. Based on the theory of New Historicism and focusing on the two key concepts, this thesis combines the real history with the fictional novel skillfully to reveal many social problems at that time.
