Cultural Translation in Early Modern Europe is a collection of essays on translation from the perspective of historians. It contains 12 papers categorized into three parts, namely, translation and language, translation and culture, and translation and science. It aims to say more about the contrasts between cultures than between individual translators, more about long-term trends than about short-term processes, and more about the history of practice than about the history of theory. The second aim is to encourage a dialogue between workers in translation studies and in cultural history, and the third is to complement existing work on the history of translation by compensating for absences. Therefore, the book can be read as a representative work on historical turn in translation studies and one on translation turn in history studies, with significance in both translation studies and history studies.
