索尔·贝娄在其代表作《赫索格》中对浪漫主义传统在继承的基础上加以演化创新,创造出一种新型浪漫主义。小说在主题上扬弃传统浪漫主义思想的极端成分继承并合理演化其精华部分,在结构上对传统冥想诗为原型,创造出一篇世俗浪漫主义冥想颂。这种新型浪漫主义是对传统浪漫主义的重新建构,是人类在高度物质化的社会中找回迷失本性的一种出路。

By inheriting and altering the traditional romanticism,Saul Bellow creates a new type,a moderate and secular Romanticism. The present thesis studies Romantic theme and form in Herzog. In theme,the novel eliminates the excesses of traditional Romanticism and inherit its essences. In form,Bellow employs creatively some writing techniques of Romantic meditative ode by substituting letters for natural scenery to inspire imagination and dispelling the seriousness of the ode with modern irony. Through the evolution of traditional romanticism,Bellow endeavors to create a secular meditative ode which can conform to modern linguistic circumstances. His purpose is to seek for a way to overcome contemporary spiritual malady.
