The image of the missionary is one form of imagining the West by Chinese contemporary writers. Inspired by Bible stories, Mo Yah created a new character in his literary kingdom, Malory, who brings religious passion and modem humanism to the historical narration, generating a broad spiritual space in the text. The transcendence of Lao Zhan, a missionary created by Liu Zhenyun, forms an intertextual relation with Malory's despair, and becomes a medium for humanitarianism and self-salvation. As the significant images of others, their opening dialogue supplies the possible benefit for the value reconstruction of our contemporary literature.
