As a Western journalist who came to China during the period of the Second Sino-Japanese War, W. H. Auden is well known to Chinese intellectuals. However, Auden's real motive to wartime China is often ignored by Chinese academia. Instead, Chinese intellectuals in Republican China systematically misinterpreted Auden, and regarded him as a spokesperson showing sympathy for the suffering of the Chinese people and exposing the brutality of the Japanese invasion. This article analyzes how Auden's visit to China was systematically misinterpreted in the Chinese context to cater to the grand discourse of national salvation through the comparison of understanding in different cultural-historical contexts by using detailed illustration of historical and literary texts. The author summarizes such process as the misappropriation of intention. However, such misappropriation, either consciously or not, can still contribute to the innovation of Chinese poetry in terms of poetic technique.
