Zhengyangmen Renewal Project in 1915 Promoted the Urban Modernization of Beijing

民国初年,北京政府内务部总长朱启钤领导京都市政公所实施了正阳门改造工程。正阳门的改造,不仅打破了北京城封闭的城市格局,缓解了交通拥堵的局面,改善了市民生活,而且冲击了传统的封建旧秩序,这对于推动古都北京的城市现代化具有重要意义。

In the early period of the Republic of China, Zhuqiqian, the interior minister led Beijing Municipal Hall to carry out the Zhengyangmen renewal project. This project was an important measure in the process of Beijing urban construction which not only changed the closed city pattern, easing the traffic pressure, improving the citizen＇s life, but also caused strong impact on traditional social orders. In a word, Zhengyangmen renewal project played an important role in promoting the urban modernization of the ancient capital Beijing.
