世纪之交的甘肃乡土诗有乡土性、民间性、地域性、伦理性和道德感。乡土诗承载着诗人的道德诉求,乡土诗人在乡村伦理建设中占有重要地位。乡土诗写作是长期生活或短期居住在乡村里的乡村精英人物维护和重建乡村道德伦理的一种方式。"乡镇文人""县城文人"的身份让他们具有强烈的"在场感"和"责任感",更容易赋予自己乡村百姓的"代言人"甚至乡村伦理的"卫道士"的时代重任,他们创作乡土诗更重视诗的教化功能,过分迷恋真实是诗人唯一的自救之道的创作原则。缺乏现代人的批判精神和现代诗的自由精神,导致乡土诗写作的单调和乡村伦理思考的粗浅。
