On the Spirit of Humanitarianism of Charles Dickens: A Case Study on "Oliver Twist"

通过研读查尔斯狄根思的作品《雾都孤儿》,对比研究男主人公奥利佛在当时救济院的悲惨生活和奥利佛在收养他的慈善家们家里收到的友好和关心,我发现了狄更斯要在本书中阐述的人道主义思想及其内涵,那就是应当由慈善的、受人尊敬的以及受过良好教育的人来管理当时的贫苦大众。因此,狄更斯的人道主义思想拥有社会价值和现实价值,在现实生活是切实可行的,能变成社会制度的一部分,是人们可以效仿实施的思想,而不是一些学者所说的虚无空洞的空谈的理论。

Through intensive reading of ＂0liver Twist＂ and the comparison of the poor life of Oliver in workhouse with Oliver＇s comfortable and carefree life under the care of those benevolent people who adopted him. The author of the paper has found out how Charles Dickens explained his idea of humanitarianism and its essence, that is, the poor should be regulated by benevolent, respected and well-educated men. Hence, Dickens＇ humanitar- ianism, with social value and realistic value, is practical in real life and can be a part of the social system, which people could put in social practice besides theory.
