During the Long March, the almost lifeless grassland was the most difficult terrain to travel. Despite greatest efforts to find food before the journey, food was still in seriously short supply. It ran out even before half the journey had been made. The Red Army officers and soldiers found various materials to feed themselves, including belts, bags or drums made of skin, fur vests, saddles, wild herbs, roots and barks. Some of the objects that testify to the hard life on the grassland can be found in the collections of the National Museum of China, such as a cowhide belt half-eaten by Zhou Guangcai and his comrades in the Fourth Red Army, a cowhide belt left by Ren Bishi and his bodyguard Li Shaoqing, wild herbs collected by a Fourth Red Army officer named Liu Yi by the Gequ river, etc. They are evidence of the extremity of the Long March and are perfect examples of the Long March spirit.
