Thousands of female soldiers of The Red Army took part in the Long March. Like men, they marched and worked hard and, as women, faced more difficulties than their male comrades. They were responsible for carrying stretchers, collecting and transporting food, taking medical care and organizing publicity activities. Sometimes, they even fought in battles. Strong, optimistic, they bravely responded to physical and psychological challenges. They won them legal status "under the red star" for their brevity and were regarded as role models for many Chinese women, who used to be associated with "weakness" "inferiority'; "cowardice" and "obedience". Female Red Army soldiers were giants in the modern history of female liberation
