Universities in undeveloped area of West China face unprecedenteo opportunmes -x development which coexist with challenges. Responding the challenges and seizing the opportunities are the key factors in development of universities in West China which must take full advantage of state policies and adopt distinctive development routes that emphasize innovation and coordinated development of the disciplines. Only by this means can the western universities play a key role in national and regional development strategies. This essay, taking Lanzhou University as an example, provides critical thinking of and an insight into the challenges and opportunities during the process of building world-class university and disciplines.
