One semester when 1 was still a professor at China Women＇s University in Beijing, 1 taught a course on American Popular Culture. I told my students the first day of class that I would not overburden them with unnecessary assignments and ＂busy work.＂ But they would need to focus and ＂be present＂ while we were in class. No phones, no distractions.
