周作人对《学衡》派的看法和态度并不是一成不变的。周作人一开始的敌视心理和批判态度一定程度上体现了民族国家现代性设计中的激进趋向。本来不无对话合作空间的双方却因为不约而同的意气作怪而变得相互挑剔和剑拔弩张起来。态度转变既是新文学整体探索和进步精神的体现,也是周作人自己宽容和文化态度的结果。新文化阵营和《学衡》派的不同选择反映了知识分子有关现代中国想象的冲突,体现了知识阶级的启蒙和现代自觉。

Zhou Zuoren＇s ideas and attitude towards Critical Review are not set. Zhou supports New Culture Movement.Zhou is different from Hu Shi and Lu Xun in the way of discussion. Lu Xun＇s critic is from ancient tradition. However,Zhou is from the west literature. Zhou shows the revolutionary direction in the dispute. Zhou＇s change of attitude to Critical Review is both active spirit of New Literature and the outcome of Zhou＇s personality and reason. The contradiction between Zhou and Critical Review represents different image of China. Zhou＇s critic embodies intellectual＇s self feeling of enlightenment and modernization.
