How Many Chieftains in Gansu and Qinghai Region in the Qing Dynasty

清朝建政之后,中央政府对西南土司实行"改土归流"之策,而西北甘青地区仍存在大量土司。顺治、康熙两朝,西北边事不断,中央政府在甘青广封土司,但数量不详。雍正至咸丰时期,据可考史料记载,甘青地区有41家土司。同治以后,中央政府没有册封新的土司,明确仍袭土司职位的只有23家。

When Qing Dynasty set up,the central government implemented policy of ＂transform chieftains to be officials＂ in Southwest China.But here were still lots of chieftains in Gansu and Qinghai region. In the period of Shunzhi and Kangxi, wars happened all the time, so the central govern- mere appointed a large number of chieftains. But the number is unknown. In the period from Yongzheng to Xianfeng,there were 41 chieftains according to historical records in Gansu and Qinghai region. After the period of Tongzhi, the central government had not appointed new chieftains, and there were still 23 chieftains in Gansu and Qinghai region.
