After the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, Japanese Buddhism Shinshu Higashi-honganji and Nishi-honganji sent preachers to open propagation offices in Fujian, aiming to confuse and poison people's minds, to intervene in lawsuits, and to in- terfere in internal affairs. At the same time, they set up Japanese schools to teach Japanese courses, in order to get popular sup- port. Buddhist mission and schooling of Higashi-honganji and Nishi-honganji in Fujian, supported by the Taiwan Government- General, was an important part of the expansion of modem Japanese forces in the province.
