From the perspective of androgyny,this paper mainly elaborates on the female characteristics of Shug Avery in the American female writer Alice Walker’s masterpiece,The Color Purple.As a female figure who has the double gender characteristics of femininity and muscularity,Shug is a typical representative of the androgyny traits. The androgynous Shug who is a truly perfect and free woman stands for the ideal condition of human personality and overthrows the Western social and cultural definition and construction of gender difference in the patriarchal society. Thus,she is the perfect embodiment of Walker’s new type women.
