Cultural Ldentification in the Perspective of Complexity: Theories of Cultural Identity in Interpretive Studies of Intercultural Communication

受社会心理学社会身份理论(social identity theory)启发,跨文化传播学将文化身份(cultural identity)发展为一个基本理论概念。唐纳尔·卡鲍尔(Donal Carbaugh),玛丽·简·考利尔(Mary Jane Collier)以及麦克尔·海克特(Michael Hecht)是三位研究文化身份的跨文化传播学(intercultural communication)诠释学派学者(interpretive scholars),其理论主要强调了身份认同过程中传播的中心性,身份演绎中自我和社会环境的动态互动性,以及由多重性、多维度、多变性组成的身份复杂性。总结梳理了这三位主要学者关于文化身份的理论,并进一步反思文化身份的复杂性。

Inspired by social identity theory in social psychology, intercultural communication scholars have embraced and developed the concept of cultural identity into a basic theoretical concept. Donal Carbaugh, Ma- ry Jane Collier, and Michael Hecht are the three prominent interpretive intercultural communication scholars, whose theories stress the centrality of identity in the process of communication, the dynamic interactivity between self and society in the enactment of identification, and identity complexity of multiplicity, multidimensionality, and fluidity. In this paper, the author summarizes the key assumptions and insights offered by their research and highlights the strengths and limitations of their theories for the conceptualization of cultural identity.
