Foregrounding of Ethnic Themes through Variant English Grammar: A Study on the Letter Capitalization in Chinese American Poetry

华裔美国英语诗歌中大写字母逆用的现象,从诗与画的跨学科视角体现了华裔美国英语诗歌中的超越传统英语诗歌书写常规的语言变异。大写字母的逆用不仅丰富了诗篇的表意能力,更是华裔诗人"言志"的一个有效又奇妙的途径:或是强化"每逢佳节倍思亲"的诗篇主题、或是前景化饱受身心分裂痛苦的华裔"残破者"形象、或是突出历代离散个体的心路历程、或是放大美国社会中种族主义意识形态依旧存在的现实。通过大写字母逆用的书写变异,华裔美国诗歌获得了常规语言无法企及的空间美感与艺术表现力。华裔美国英语诗歌通过书写变异来书写变异人生,实现了画面美感与族裔情感的统一。

Tracing the letter capitalization in Chinese American poetry, this paper analyzed its language variation from traditional English poetry writing. The variant usage of capitalization not only enriched the poems＇ signifying ability but also extended a new way of expressing inner wills for the poets by underlying the poetic theme of ＂nostalgia during festival＂ , foregrounding Chinese Americans＇ physical and psychological ＂brokenness＂ , projecting inner progress of diasporic individuals or extracting the reality of present racist ideology in American society. Through the writing variation of capitalization, Chinese American poetry attained unparalleled spatial beauty and artistic expression as well as the unity of visual artistic perception and ethnic feelings.
