This paper presents a place-making project in Artena, near Rome in Italy, based on the soundscape and "urban acupuncture" theories. The intention of this project is to move away from traditional place-making strategies that usually focus on visible improvement of the space, and to explore the relationship between people and the space from the aspect of acoustic environment. Soundscape in Artena is designed by introducing the sound of mules' bell ring, which not only brings pleasant sound into the small town and changes the atmosphere here, but also functions as different information sources, such as alerting and conducting business on the mules' back as a kind of social care to the seniors. The sound of mules' bell ring also shows a great potential to become a soundmark of Artena and contribute to forming the "sense of place". Further it can be incorporated into the local cultural identity with the special design of the bell. This project is a referable example of how the quality of a space can be improved from the aural aspect.
