Radiation-induced oral mucositis (ROM) is a major complication in radiotherapy of head and neck. Mucositis is related to concurrent chemotherapy as well as altered fractionation schedules. The clinical symptoms associated with mucositis include oral pain, oral intake reduced, and secondary infections, which may lead to treatment interruption, suboptimal disease control, and poor quality of life. Hence, prevention and management of ROM is very important. In this review, some recent topics in terminology, prevalence, pathophysiology, clinical appearance, prophylaxis and treatment of mucositis related to radiation therapy are discussed.
