Personality and Literary Quality of the Group of Authors around YAO Sui

姚燧在元初为一代文章大家。他培养和提携了一批文章家,形成了围绕在他周围的姚门文章家群,影响一时。这是一个具有流派性质的文章家群,群体的核心成员张养浩、孛术鲁翀、刘致、贯云石、李泂等人,因对姚燧人格、文章的倾慕而结集于姚燧门下。他们以人格与文品为当时所重,在文坛居于主导地位。他们人格峻洁、抗世独立、不屈于权、不挠于势、又轻富贵重修为。其文章各有特点,而共同点是古雅刚方、舂容盛大、动荡开合、气势宏壮、时见奇峻,是其峻洁人格的反映。他们也有平易畅达之作,则得之于作者浩然正大之气。其为文与为人的精神,足可为后世效法。

YAO Sui was a great author who had so much effect in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty. He trained,guided and helped a lot of youngwriters around him that formed a group which had the character of the literary school. As core members of this group,ZHANG Yang-hao,BOSHULU Chong,LIU Zhi,GUAN Yun-shi and LI Jiong concentrated around YAO Sui because of admiring his personality and literary quality. They were respected by people of the literary scene at that time for their personality and literary quality. These members had the independence of personality and deliberate morality,and they did not give in to power. They had contempt for wealth and emphasized on morality education. Although each of their articles had their own characteristics,they had the same quality: classical,upright,undulating and magnificent,and might sometimes also present steep style. All of these characteristics were reflections of their deliberate personalities. They also had smooth and easy works which benefited from their own generous and honest personalities. Works and the spirit of the group of authors around YAO Sui were models for generations.
