The founding of Shangmei Design Studio by Chen Zhifo was one of the most important events in the history of Chinese modern design. As an art institute serving the dyeing and weaving industry, Shangmei Design Studio for the first time broken the hereto tradition of mixing design and manufacture. This has been seen as a sign of the independence of modern design industry. This paper examines some of the key issues about Shangmei Design Studio, including the motives, time and space of its founding, its operation mechanism, the causes of its final closure, and its historical significance.
