On the Verbal Characteristics of the English Action Nouns

由动词派生而来的动作名词具有表达动作或状态的能力,因此兼有动词性特征,能够表达时间意义、体貌意义、语态意义和语气意义等;有逻辑主语、逻辑宾语、逻辑状语等,还能在谓语中起实意动词的作用。对英语动作名词的动词性特征的分析不仅对汉英对比与翻译有一定的指导意义,而且更能揭示出词法与句法的有机联系,将语法研究引向深入。

A verb is a word that indicates action or state. An action noun derived from a verb also has the ability to express action or state. Therefore,it has the features of a verb,expressing the meaning of time,aspectual meaning,voice meaning and modal meaning; it has logical subject, logical object, and logic adverbial; it can also play a role of a notional verb in the verbal predicate. The analysis of verbal features of English action nouns can not only serve as the practical guidance of Eng- lish-Chinese contrast and translation, but also reveal the organic connection between morphology and syntax,which leads grammar study into a deeper scope.
