Harshness is an index of measurement, which can reflect the difficulty degree of images to be compressed. This paper firstly introduces the origin and definition of criticality. Secondly it introduces the methods of measurement and analysing the results. Then it gives a set of practical cases of HD and SD materials. Finally, it summarizes the important role and significance of criticality.
