This paper gives a brief overview of the subject service at the University of Oregon Libraries in terms of its organization and structure, qualifications and responsibilities of the subject librarians. It puts forth some recommendations for changes in subject service provided at the academic libraries in China in the following areas： enhancing the library service and promoting the presence of the library on campuses by encouraging library administrators to be more actively involved not only as leaders, but also as librarians; building a mechanism to ensure a more effective and stable system; encouraging more collaboration across different disciplines （subject areas） among the subject specialists; and creating a more focused and detailed service model with humanistic concern.
