尚贤堂由美国传教士李佳白于1897年创建于北京,其前身为"上层社会传道会"(The Mission Among the Higher Classes)。尚贤堂并不只是一个单纯的传教机构,而是一所集教育、社交、出版于一体的综合性文化机构,主要针对上层社会而创办,通过开展一系列活动,为中西文化交流提供平台,从而影响中国社会。尚贤堂对中西文化交流起到了积极的推动作用,但同时也有其局限性。

The International Institute of China by the United States Presbyterian missionary Gilbert Reid was founded in Beijing in 1897. It was formerly known as 'The Mission Among the Higher Classes'. The International Institute of China is not a simple missionary institutions,but an integration of educational,social,cultural institution,and publication. It focuses on upper class,through a series of upper- class social activities,Providing a platform for the intergration of Chinese and western culture,thus affecting the Chinese society. The International Institute of China played a positive role in promoting the communication of Chinese and western culture,but it also has its limitations.
