A Great Master in the Eyes of a Master: XU Fuguan's Comment on TANG Junyi

徐复观先生乃唐君毅先生之挚友,两人相交超过30年。唐先生逝世后,徐先生在不同文字中对唐先生都有所描绘,对唐先生的学问及行事做人方面的表现,均推崇备至。徐先生并谦虚地承认唐先生在学问上对他多所启迪。然而,徐先生"好而知其恶",指出唐先生投稿至《民主评论》的文稿也许太长了一点,文字也艰涩了一点,深盼唐先生能写些轻松、浅白的文章,以方便接引后学。

Professor XU Fuguan was an intimate friend of Professor TANG Junyi. They were in close rela- tionship for more than 30 years. After Professor TANG had passed away, Professor XU gave accounts of TANG in many occasions. Professor XU paid high respects to TANG in the field of his achievements in scholarship as well as in his performances in daily life. XU even acknowledged that TANG had always been a great inspiration to him in the course of his studies. However, XU pointed out that TANG＇ s writing style, as reviewed from his papers published in The Democratic Review, was perhaps too clumsy. Hence, XU sug- gested frankly that TANG could write some short and simple articles, in order that the younger generation could fully understand the meaning of the articles.
