《道德经》英译历史悠久,作品丰富。作为海外中国哲学研究的中坚人物,陈荣捷对《道德经》的英译密切关注。自20世纪30年代开始,华裔学者逐步加入到英译《道德经》的队伍中,在一定程度上改变了过去主要由西方传教士主导《道德经》英译的局面。陈荣捷不仅对它们进行了全面深入的评介,还亲自将《道德经》和王弼《老子注》翻译成英语,为海外高校和学术界提供了可靠的经典读本。陈荣捷的译介工作还在很大程度上改变了过去西方《道德经》英译中的神秘化和宗教化倾向,凸显了《道德经》的哲学意蕴。

The English translation of Tao Te Chinghas a long history so that a wealth of translated works has been produced.As a core scholar in the field of overseas Chinese philosophy research,Wing-tsit Chan always payed close attention to each and every move of the English translation of Tao Te Ching.Since 1930 ssome Chinese-American scholars gradually join the team of the English translation of Tao Te Ching which to a certain extent has changed the old situation that the western missionaries played a leading role in the translation. Wing-tsit Chan not only gave intensive and comprehensive comment on these translated texts,but also translated the classic text of Tao Te Chingand the comments of Wangbi into English personally.Chan＇s outstanding jobs has provided reliable reading texts for readers of overseas universities and academia.In addition,What Wing-tsit Chan done has changed the tendency of mystification and Christianization of the English translation of Tao Te Ching to some extent and then highlighted Tao Te Ching＇s philosophical implication.
