The Restoration and Adaptive Reuse of L'Observatoire de Zi-kawei On the Historical Dimension of Authenticity in Historic Preservation

By introducing the restoration and adaptive reuse of the former L＇Observatoire de Zi-kawei in Shanghai, a collaborative project by the Atelier Z＋, UDG and DPS, this article re-opens a discussion on the notion of authenticity in historic preservation. It reveals that the principle of authenticity inevitably is inflected with complicated and contradictory situations when put into practice. But on the other hand complexities can also turn out to be the opportunities for architects, through whose intelligent work, more approaches for engaging dialogue between the old and the new having been explored. This type of practice is also a way ofinterpreting a historic building in terms of its context. By re-organizing the spatial narratives and place specific experiences, the historic value of the building in relation to the site can be identified and revealed, so that the practice of preservation and adaptive reuse can be integrated into the progress of the city＇s cultural development.
